The Maharashtra government has launched the ‘Aai’ Tourism Policy, an initiative aimed at bringing more women into the tourism sector and creating opportunities for them to grow within it. The policy is designed to support women not only as travellers but also as entrepreneurs who want to build businesses in tourism and hospitality.

Tourism has become an important part of the state’s economy, creating jobs and opportunities across cities, towns and rural areas. Through this policy, the government hopes to ensure that more women are able to benefit from this growing sector. The initiative encourages women not only to explore destinations across the state but also to take up entrepreneurial roles within the tourism industry.

One of the key provisions of the policy is financial support for women entrepreneurs. Women who want to start tourism-related ventures can apply for interest-free loans of up to ₹15 lakh. The financial assistance can be used by women to start a wide range of tourism-related ventures, including homestays, small guesthouses, cafés, travel agencies, tour services and agro-tourism initiatives. For many aspiring entrepreneurs, arranging the initial investment is often the biggest challenge. With this support in place, women will have the opportunity to turn their ideas into real businesses without having to worry as much about the financial strain that usually comes with starting something new.

The policy also includes benefits aimed at encouraging women to travel more frequently. Women tourists will receive special concessions when booking accommodation at Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) properties. These incentives are expected to encourage more women to explore destinations within the state and promote domestic tourism.

Another important focus of the ‘Aai’ Tourism Policy is improving safety and comfort for women travellers which has been a prime concern over the years. Efforts are being made to promote women-friendly tourism infrastructure and services across key destinations. This includes encouraging trained women guides and supporting tourism ventures operated by women.

In addition, women’s self-help groups will be encouraged to participate in tourism activities by selling locally made handicrafts, traditional food items and other regional products at tourist destinations. This will not only provide additional income opportunities but also help promote local culture and traditions.

Officials say the overall objective of the ‘Aai’ Tourism Policy is to create a tourism environment where women feel confident travelling and empowered to take part in the industry. By offering financial assistance, improving facilities and encouraging entrepreneurship, the initiative aims to strengthen women’s role in the tourism sector while supporting the continued growth of tourism in the state.
