Mumbai’s Beloved ‘Van Rani’ Toy Train Set to Make a Comeback at Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Mumbai: Families, children, and nature lovers have something to look forward to—Mumbai’s iconic ‘Van Rani’ toy train is all set to hit the tracks again at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) by the end of this month. The train, a favorite weekend getaway for city residents, has been out of service for four years after Cyclone Tauktae caused damage to the tracks and park facilities in 2021.

The new Van Rani comes with upgraded battery-operated Vistadome coaches, offering passengers wide, unobstructed views of the park’s green forests, winding paths, and wildlife. The 2.7 km narrow-gauge route runs through the Krishnagiri Upvan area, a 5.5 sq km public recreation zone inside SGNP, giving visitors a peaceful retreat from the city’s chaos.

The train now has space for 80 passengers, making it slightly roomier than before. Developed by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) with an investment of over ₹43 crore, the project aims to make the park more family-friendly while promoting eco-tourism.

During the ride, passengers will see informative panels about the park’s plants and animals. The train also passes by the Deer Park, offering glimpses of deer grazing in their natural habitat. For many visitors, it’s more than just a ride—it’s an opportunity to connect with nature, spend quality time with family, and relive childhood memories.

The Van Rani’s return is expected to attract not only Mumbai locals but also tourists from other states. “It’s wonderful to see the train back,” said one visitor. “Weekends at SGNP won’t be the same without it.”

With the train set to run again, the park strengthens its role as a green oasis in the city, offering both fun and learning for everyone who steps on board.
