Vaishno Devi Yatra to Resume from September 14: Key Guidelines for Devotees

Katra: Good news for devotees of Mata Vaishno Devi — the yatra to the holy cave shrine in the Trikuta Hills will resume from September 14. The pilgrimage had been suspended for several weeks after heavy rains and landslides made the trek unsafe.

Why the Suspension Was Needed

Vaishno Devi Yatra

The monsoon this year caused repeated landslides and left long stretches of the track slippery. Authorities decided to pause the yatra as a precaution, keeping pilgrim safety in mind. Over the past few weeks, workers cleared debris, strengthened the path, and carried out safety checks before giving the green signal to reopen.

Steps Taken for Safety

Officials say that vulnerable points on the route have now been barricaded, medical teams are on standby, and additional security personnel are being deployed. Public address systems and CCTV monitoring will help manage the expected crowds once the pilgrimage resumes.

Guidelines for Pilgrims

If you’re planning to visit after September 14, here are some important instructions to follow:

  • Register in advance, either online or at authorized counters in Katra.

  • Carry a valid ID proof; health checks may be done before the trek.

  • Stick to the designated routes — the traditional Banganga track or the newer Tarakote path.

  • Travel light, wear proper footwear, and avoid shortcuts.

  • Keep track of weather updates, as the yatra may pause if conditions worsen.

Facilities for Devotees

To make the journey easier, the Shrine Board has set up medical aid posts, water points, rest shelters, and food outlets along the route. Battery-operated vehicles on the Tarakote path and helicopter services from Katra to Sanjichhat will also be available for pilgrims who cannot walk the entire stretch.

Heavy Rush Expected

With the reopening coming just ahead of the festive season, officials are preparing for a big increase in footfall. During Navratri, the shrine often sees more than 30,000 visitors a day, and crowd management plans are already in place.

A Sacred Journey

At 5,200 feet above sea level, the Vaishno Devi shrine is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. For countless devotees, the trek is more than just a climb — it’s a journey of faith. The reopening of the yatra will be a welcome relief for thousands who have been waiting eagerly for darshan.
