Amid intense winter conditions and growing safety concerns, the Sissu Panchayat has decided to temporarily suspend all tourist activities in the valley from January 20 to February 28. The move comes as the region braces for heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and unpredictable weather, which make travel increasingly risky during this time of the year.

Why the Ban Was Needed

Residents and local authorities say winters in Sissu are particularly challenging. Snow-covered roads, black ice, and sudden whiteouts often disrupt movement, while emergency services struggle to respond quickly when roads are blocked. With tourist numbers rising sharply in recent winters, managing safety has become a serious concern.

“Every winter we see vehicles getting stuck, traffic jams on narrow roads, and tourists unprepared for extreme weather,” said a local panchayat member. “This decision is about preventing accidents and ensuring no one is put at risk.”

Tourism Pressure on a Small Valley

Tourism Pressure on a Small Valley

Sissu has grown into a popular stop for travellers heading towards Lahaul and beyond, especially after improved road connectivity. While tourism has brought attention to the valley, locals say the winter rush often overwhelms the area’s limited infrastructure. Parking chaos, lack of space during snowfall, and delays in clearing roads have all contributed to the decision.

What Will Be Restricted

During the ban period, leisure travel, sightseeing, and short-term tourist visits will not be allowed in the valley. Hotels, homestays, and tour operators have been asked to inform visitors in advance to avoid last-minute confusion. Daily life for residents, along with essential services and emergency movement, will continue as usual.

Locals Seek Cooperation

The panchayat has appealed to travellers to respect the decision and understand the realities of winter in a high-altitude Himalayan village. “This is not about discouraging tourism,” a resident said. “It’s about taking a pause when nature demands it.”

What Happens Next

Authorities have said the situation will be reviewed toward the end of February. If weather and road conditions improve, tourist activities may resume after February 28. Travellers planning winter trips to Himachal Pradesh are advised to keep track of official announcements and plan their journeys responsibly.
