Travel across North India is set to become significantly faster as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated key sections of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, one of India’s biggest infrastructure projects under the Bharatmala Programme.
Once the 670-kilometre Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway becomes fully operational, commuters will be able to travel from Delhi to Amritsar in around four hours and Delhi to Katra in approximately six hours, reducing travel time considerably compared to existing routes.
The new access-controlled expressway aims to improve road connectivity, boost tourism, support economic growth, and enhance freight transportation across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.
What is the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway?
The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is a high-speed, access-controlled highway being developed under the Bharatmala Project, India’s flagship road infrastructure initiative.
Key Highlights
- Total Length: 670 km
- Project: Bharatmala Programme
- Connects: Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir
- Expected Delhi to Amritsar Travel Time: 4 Hours
- Expected Delhi to Katra Travel Time: 6 Hours
- Designed for high-speed, safer road travel
The expressway is expected to become one of the most important transport corridors in North India after its completion.
Delhi to Amritsar Travel Time Reduced to 4 Hours
One of the biggest advantages of the expressway is the drastic reduction in travel time.
Currently, driving from Delhi to Amritsar can take 7 to 9 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. After the expressway is fully operational, the same journey is expected to take only around four hours.
This improvement will make business travel, family vacations, and weekend trips much more convenient.
Delhi to Katra Journey Will Take Just 6 Hours
Pilgrims visiting the famous Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra will also benefit from the new expressway.
The current road journey from Delhi to Katra usually takes 10 to 12 hours, but the completed expressway is expected to reduce travel time to around six hours.
This will make one of India’s most visited pilgrimage destinations more accessible throughout the year.
Benefits for Tourists and Pilgrims
The expressway is expected to transform road tourism in North India.
Major benefits include:
- Faster access to the Golden Temple in Amritsar
- Easier pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi in Katra
- Reduced travel fatigue
- Safer and smoother driving experience
- Better weekend travel options from Delhi
- Improved connectivity to Amritsar International Airport
Families, solo travellers, bikers, and road-trip enthusiasts are expected to benefit from the improved highway infrastructure.
Economic Benefits of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway
Apart from improving travel, the expressway is expected to generate significant economic benefits.
The project is likely to:
- Boost tourism across Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir
- Increase business opportunities for hotels and restaurants
- Improve logistics and freight movement
- Reduce transportation costs
- Support agricultural supply chains
- Create employment opportunities during and after construction
Improved connectivity generally leads to increased investment and regional development, benefiting both urban and rural areas along the route.
Current Status of the Expressway
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated selected sections of the expressway, while construction on the remaining stretches is progressing in phases.
Once all sections become operational, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway will provide uninterrupted, high-speed connectivity between Delhi and major destinations in North India.
Why the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway Matters?
The expressway is more than just a road project. It represents a major step towards modernising India’s transport infrastructure by reducing travel time, improving road safety, and supporting economic growth.
With faster access to religious destinations, tourist attractions, airports, and commercial hubs, the corridor is expected to play a key role in North India’s development.
