Kerala has launched Brand Wayanad, a new tourism initiative aimed at giving the hill district a distinct identity on the global tourism map. Launched on October 6, 2026, at Vythiri, the initiative seeks to position Wayanad as an experience-led destination built around nature, culture, agriculture and indigenous heritage.
The initiative was launched as part of the Kerala Government’s 100-Day Action Programme. The two-day programme brings together government representatives, tourism stakeholders and local communities to outline a new vision for Wayanad and strengthen its position as a major tourism destination.
What Is Brand Wayanad?
Brand Wayanad is a Kerala tourism initiative designed to create a distinct global identity for Wayanad and promote the district through its natural landscapes, indigenous heritage, agriculture, cuisine, handicrafts and local communities.
Rather than promoting Wayanad only through individual tourist attractions, the initiative aims to present the district as a broader experience-led tourism ecosystem.
The approach brings together Wayanad’s biodiversity, wildlife, tribal heritage, farming traditions, local cuisine and locally produced goods under a unified tourism identity.
From a Hill Destination to an Experience-Led Tourism Ecosystem
Brand Wayanad aims to move beyond conventional sightseeing and encourage travellers to experience the destination through its people, landscape, culture and local traditions.
Wayanad’s tourism appeal includes:
- Western Ghats landscapes
- Forests and wildlife
- Coffee and spice plantations
- Trekking routes
- Caves and outdoor experiences
- Indigenous communities
- Traditional cuisine
- Handicrafts
- Locally produced agricultural products
By bringing these experiences together, the initiative aims to create a stronger and more recognisable identity for Wayanad in the global tourism market.
Coffee, Spices and Local Flavours Take Centre Stage
Agriculture will be an important part of the new Wayanad tourism identity. The district’s coffee, spices, traditional rice varieties, honey and local cuisine are expected to become an integral part of its tourism experience.
Farm-to-Cup Coffee Experiences in Wayanad
Coffee is expected to play a major role in Brand Wayanad, with the region’s Robusta coffee being connected to farm-to-cup tourism experiences.
Visitors can experience coffee plantations, learn about local farming practices and understand the journey of coffee from cultivation to consumption.
This approach gives Wayanad an identity beyond conventional hill tourism by connecting travel with the district’s agricultural heritage and local economy.
Brand Wayanad to Highlight Tribal and Indigenous Heritage
Indigenous culture is another major pillar of Brand Wayanad.
The Kerala Government plans to expand En Ooru, the heritage village showcasing tribal culture, while also proposing initiatives focused on indigenous knowledge, heritage and community development.
The objective is to make indigenous communities active participants in the tourism ecosystem while giving visitors greater opportunities to understand Wayanad’s traditional culture and way of life.
En Ooru and Tribal Tourism in Wayanad
En Ooru showcases aspects of tribal culture, traditions, handicrafts, food and indigenous knowledge.
Under the broader Brand Wayanad vision, such experiences can become part of an integrated tourism offering that places local communities and cultural heritage at the centre of destination development.
Why Brand Wayanad Matters for Kerala Tourism?
Brand Wayanad represents a shift from attraction-based tourism promotion towards experience-based destination marketing.
Instead of positioning Wayanad only as a destination for mountains, forests and scenic landscapes, Kerala is seeking to build a broader tourism identity around:
Nature + Wildlife + Coffee + Agriculture + Tribal Heritage + Cuisine + Handicrafts + Local Communities
This approach can help showcase the different experiences available in Wayanad while creating stronger connections between tourism, local businesses, farmers, artisans and communities.
