A major highway project cutting through the hills of Madhya Pradesh is set to change the way people travel between Indore and Hyderabad. For years, travellers on this route have had to pass through narrow ghat sections, steep slopes and winding roads that slow down traffic and often make the journey tiring.
Tunnels Through the Mountains
One of the most remarkable parts of the project is the construction of three tunnels through the hills. Instead of forcing vehicles to climb steep and curving ghat roads, the tunnels will allow traffic to pass directly through the mountains.
The tunnels being built include the Bherughat Tunnel, which will stretch for about 575 metres, the Choral Ghat Tunnel at around 550 metres, and the Baigram Tunnel, expected to be close to 480 metres long. Together, they will help bypass some of the most difficult parts of the existing road.
The Toughest Section of the Project
The most challenging stretch lies between Tejaji Nagar, on the outskirts of Indore, and Balwada in the Khargone district. This roughly 33-kilometre section passes through rocky hills and uneven terrain, making construction particularly complex.
What It Means for Travellers
For people who frequently drive between Indore and Hyderabad, the new highway could make a noticeable difference. The improved road is expected to reduce travel time and make the journey far less stressful, especially for long-distance drivers and transport operators.
A wider road with fewer sharp turns will also improve safety, something that has been a concern along several parts of the current route.

Tourism could also receive a boost. Improved access may make it easier for travellers to visit places like Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the country’s well-known pilgrimage sites located on the banks of the Narmada River.
