The Char Dham Yatra will commence on April 19, 2026, as the four sacred Himalayan shrines in Uttarakhand reopen after their winter closure. The announcement has brought clarity for thousands of devotees who plan months for the annual pilgrimage.
Each year, heavy snowfall forces the temples to shut down during winter. With the arrival of spring and improved weather conditions, preparations begin across the region to welcome pilgrims once again.
Opening Dates Announced
As per the schedule released by temple authorities:
- Yamunotri Temple – April 19, 2026
- Gangotri Temple – April 19, 2026
- Kedarnath Temple – April 22, 2026
- Badrinath Temple – April 23, 2026
The reopening of Yamunotri and Gangotri coincides with Akshaya Tritiya, considered an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. The occasion is marked by traditional rituals, prayers and ceremonial proceedings before devotees are allowed darshan.
Significance of the Pilgrimage

The Char Dham circuit — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — is one of the most important religious journeys for Hindus. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, the pilgrimage draws lakhs of visitors every year.
During winter, when the region becomes inaccessible, the idols are moved to lower-altitude temples where worship continues. The reopening in spring marks the return of the pilgrimage season.
Preparations Across Uttarakhand
With large numbers of pilgrims expected in 2026, authorities are likely to review arrangements related to road connectivity, medical facilities, safety measures, and crowd management. Registration for the yatra remains mandatory, and devotees are advised to complete formalities and book accommodation in advance.
The Char Dham Yatra typically continues until October or November, depending on weather conditions, before the shrines close again for the winter months.
