Indian travellers passing through Singapore now have a little more freedom — and a lot more reason to step outside the airport.
Singapore has announced that eligible Indian passport holders can enter the country without a visa for up to 96 hours while transiting to another destination. The facility, known as the Visa-Free Transit Facility (VFTF), allows travellers to turn long layovers into short city breaks.
For many Indians flying to Europe, East Asia, or North America, Singapore is a frequent transit point. Until now, stepping out of the airport often meant planning for a visa. The updated rule makes that stopover far simpler — at least for those who meet the criteria.
Who Is Eligible
The visa-free transit applies to Indian citizens who are travelling onward to a third country, with Singapore serving only as a stopover.
To qualify, travellers must hold a valid visa or long-term residence permit from one of eight countries — Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the UK, or the US. This visa must remain valid for at least one month from the date of entry into Singapore.
A confirmed onward ticket departing within 96 hours is also mandatory.
What Travellers Can Expect
Those who qualify can clear immigration and stay in Singapore for up to four days — enough time to explore the city, meet friends, enjoy local food, or simply rest between long-haul flights.
The stay, however, cannot be extended, and final entry is always at the discretion of Singapore’s immigration officers at the checkpoint.
What This Doesn’t Change
The visa-free transit does not apply if Singapore is the final destination. Travellers planning a longer visit or a direct trip to Singapore will still need to apply for a regular visa in advance.
Authorities have also reminded travellers that overstaying the 96-hour limit could result in penalties or future travel restrictions.
Why This Matters
The move comes at a time when Indian international travel is growing rapidly. By easing transit rules, Singapore strengthens its appeal as a global travel hub — while giving Indian travellers a chance to experience the city without additional paperwork.
For many, this means long layovers no longer have to be spent inside terminals. Instead, they can become brief but memorable journeys.
